July 8 marks the opening of the red deer hind, calf, and young stag (up to two years old) hunting season. While many hunters dream of roaring stags in September, today’s opening plays an equally important role in responsible wildlife management.
Latvia is home to a healthy red deer population, currently estimated at around 68,000 animals. In several regions, particularly Kurzeme and Zemgale, deer numbers remain high, leading to increasing pressure on forests and agricultural land through browsing damage. Wildlife managers have therefore placed strong emphasis on harvesting hinds and young animals, as this is the most effective and sustainable way to balance population growth while maintaining healthy herds. Early season hunts are about much more than harvesting game. They are about stewardship, careful observation, and making decisions that will benefit both the deer population and Latvia’s forests for years to come.
For many hunters, this is also the beginning of a journey that builds excitement with every passing sunrise. Velvet has already disappeared from many antlers, bachelor groups are becoming restless, and the first signs of autumn are slowly appearing in the woods.
