The roe buck season is well underway, and it has already delivered some memorable moments in the field.
Across Latvia, hunters have enjoyed a strong start to the season, with several outstanding bucks harvested. At the same time, conditions have varied between regions. In some areas, the effects of the past winter are evident, with trophy quality reflecting the challenges wildlife faced during the colder months. Even so, the season has already produced a number of exceptional roe bucks, highlighting the resilience of Latvia’s healthy population.
Roe deer are the most widespread deer species in Latvia, with an estimated population of around 200,000 animals. Their ability to adapt to a wide range of habitats, from agricultural landscapes to dense forests, makes them an important part of the country’s wildlife and a key species in sustainable game management.
As July progresses, attention turns to one of the most exciting periods of the hunting calendar: the roe deer rut.
During the rut, bucks become highly territorial and actively search for does, often covering large distances and responding more readily to movement and calls. This unique behaviour creates excellent opportunities for carefully planned stalking hunts, while also offering a fascinating glimpse into one of nature’s most dynamic annual events.
